Singapore and US Align for Feasibility Study on Regional Energy Connectivity

The Singapore Ministry of Trade and Industry, Energy Market Authority of Singapore and the United States Department of Energy (DOE) have announced a joint feasibility study on regional energy connectivity.

The study is to be jointly conducted by Singapore and the United States over two phases. The first phase will include reviews of existing and potential power interconnections in ASEAN, as well as the socioeconomic benefits of regional energy connectivity.

The second phase will cover the legal and governance frameworks as well as financing arrangements needed to facilitate regional energy connectivity.

The study is intended to facilitate the development of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) initiative, as well as support regional efforts to deploy renewable energy and collectively decarbonise.

Both parties said they look forward to sharing initial findings from the first phase of the joint study by October 2023.

The proposal to conduct the feasibility study on Regional Energy Connectivity was first announced on 14 July 2022 at the sidelines of the US-Southeast Asia Clean Energy Roundtable in Singapore to further both countries’ energy collaborations, including the U.S.-Singapore Climate Partnership.

Both parties said they welcomed the participation of partners from the Net Zero World Initiative and Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF) to strengthen regional energy connectivity.
