Liverpool Becomes First Premier League Club to Receive Sustainability Certification
One of Asia’s favourite English Premier League teams Liverpool Football Club (Liverpool), has become the first Premier League club to be awarded the British Standards Institution (BSI) ISO 20121 certificate, which recognises and rewards its successful practice of sustainable development methods.
Recipients of this certificate need to demonstrate that they are minimising potential negative impacts on the environment, communities and local economies - as well as maximizing sustainable positive impacts they can be proud of.
This latest major accolade is in recognition of The Red Way Initiative, a pioneering program that places sustainability at the heart of Liverpool's work across the club's operations, including matchday operations, Anfield, and the AXA Training Centre.
The Reds have previously topped the Sports Positive Environmental Sustainability League 2021 and are considered the greenest club in the Premier League. Liverpool are also currently supporting the upcoming Green Football Weekend, encouraging fans to go green by registering at www.greenfootballweekend.com, taking specific environmental actions and earning points for the team in the event.
Liverpool also won double awards at the prestigious 2022 SEAL Corporate Sustainability Awards, recognizing the club's leadership in the continued development of a positive environment.
These awards highlight the many improvements made since The Red Way launched in January 2021. This is Liverpool's sustainable approach to creating a better future for its people, its community and the planet and living it out in every aspect of the club.
Reds go Green
Liverpool's aim is to achieve net zero emissions across its sporting operations by the end of the 2022-23 season, meaning the club will implement its robust carbon reduction program and offset any remaining carbon emissions.
In 2025, the club plans to use 100% low-carbon and clean energy in club operations, and to reduce the club's actual operational carbon emissions by 50% by 2030. Currently, club buses are also using sustainable fuel, which can reduce carbon emissions by up to 90% compared with regular diesel.
Liverpool have been awarded BSI accreditation following a comprehensive audit of the club's sustainability management system. A rigorous club-wide process that looks beyond matchday activities and looks at the operational structure that underpins The Red Way, the club's sustainability programme.
All venues (Anfield Stadium, AXA Training Centre, Youth Academy and Distribution Center) have been independently assessed to vet activities, products and services to ensure sustainability standards are met. A presentation was recently held at Anfield, where BSI officially presented Liverpool with a certificate, with Hannah Simpkins being presented with the award by BSI Partnerships Manager Thomas Harrison and BSI Finance Director Andrew Price.
Hannah Simpkins, Vice President of Operations Liverpool, said: We are proud to have achieved ISO 20121 certification. This is a fantastic honor for the club and recognition for The Red Way programme. The award provides recognition for our approach to sustainability in sport. A lot of work and effort has gone into getting the BSI accreditation from the Liverpool team. We are very aware of our responsibility as a globally renowned club to make a positive impact on everyone. Hundreds of millions of supporters around the world know we're well-positioned to help impact sustainable decisions in their everyday lives, which is why it's so important to us. "
Martin Townsend BSI, Director of the Sustainability Center of Excellence, said: "Warm congratulations to Liverpool on becoming the first Premier League club to be certified to the BSI standard. Football inspires and inspires us all, especially young people. However, a good game is not only It needs to be inspiring on the pitch, but it also needs to be sustainable off it. At BSI we are proud to support this area and will continue to work with industry and society across sectors to accelerate the adoption of sustainable measures."
