Jakarta Aiming for 300 Electric Buses in 2023

To support efforts to clean up the Indonesian capital’s air quality, the mega-city’s bus rapid transit service TransJakarta is planning to add another 190 electric buses to its fleet next year.

With the addition of the 190 electric buses to the existing fleet of 30, TransJakarta will bolster its number of electric buses to 220 electric buses.

The acting Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono said earlier this year that in 2023 the target would be to see a total of 300 electric buses on the capital’s streets to support environmentally friendly transportation in Jakarta.

According to air quality monitoring tools, the Indonesian city of more than 11 million people consistently ranks as one of the most polluted cities in the world, with about 20 million vehicles using its congested streets daily.

Currently, vehicle emissions are the biggest contributor to the city’s pollution with Jakarta’s air regularly found to be containing unhealthy levels of harmful gases like carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and ground level ozone as well as particulate matter (PM) which can comprise various chemicals.

The Indonesian government has ambitious targets of getting up to 2 million electric vehicles on the country's roads by 2025.
