Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand and Shell to Study Clean Energy and Carbon Capture

The Shell Company of Thailand and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) signed an MoU to study clean energy development with the aim to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and drive Thailand toward Net Zero Emissions by 2065.

Boonyanit Wongrukmit, EGAT Governor, said that to support Thailand’s commitment in the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) to achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2050 and Net Zero Emissions by 2065, EGAT has implemented the Triple S strategy.

That policy comprises of Sources Transformation: increasing renewable energy share in the generation mix and developing new technologies to support renewable electricity generation.

Sink Co-creation: increasing sources for carbon sequestration through the One-Million-Rai Reforestation Project and the study of CCUS, and Support Measures Mechanism: enhancing public participation in greenhouse gas reduction through the Energy-Saving Label No.5 Project and Green Classroom Project as well as promoting electric vehicle deployment.

This cooperation aims to study clean energy technologies covering carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) and the use of hydrogen and ammonia as alternative fuels for electricity generation.

These technologies will help reduce CO2 emissions in the context of Thailand that still depends on fossil fuels for electricity generation to maintain energy security and meet the national power demand.

The success gained from the MoU will be expanded to EGAT’s power plants and future projects for the benefits of the country as Thailand aims to reach its target of net zero emissions by 2065.
