China's Largest Offshore Wind Power Project Begins Operation

China's largest unsubsidized offshore wind power project located in Shanwei, in South China's Guangdong Province, is now fully operational and achieving grid parity.

Grid parity for offshore wind power refers to the point at which the price of wind-generated electricity fed to the grid is equal to that of coal without subsidies.

According to a press release from the China General Nuclear Power Corp (CGN), the total installed capacity of the project is 1.4 million kilowatts.

The facility is expected to generate 4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, equivalent to saving 1.27 million tonnes of standard coal and reducing 3.1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, Bao Xiupeng, general manager at CGN's New Energy Shanwei Offshore Wind Power Corporation said.

The full operation of the 900,000-kilowatt (kW) offshore wind power project also means the construction of the offshore wind farm in the shallow waters 25 kilometers off Shanwei has been completed.
