Bangladesh Plans 40% of Power Generation From Clean Energy by 2041

As part of its long-term master plan for the power sector, the government of Bangladesh has set a target of covering 40% of its power generation with clean energy by 2041 (including 10% of renewables in power generation) and to import around 9 GW under regional and sub-regional cooperation.

At the end of 2021, Bangladesh's installed capacity stood at over 29 GW, including nearly 16 GW of oil-fired capacity and 11 GW of gas-fired capacity. Renewables remained marginal with 230 MW of hydropower and 329 MW of solar capacity.

The renewable capacity is estimated to have exceeded 950 MW in 2022. Under its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) (August 2021), Bangladesh aims to reach 4.1 GW of renewable capacity by 2030, including nearly 2.3 GW of solar capacity.

The Ministry for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources aims to reach an installed capacity of 40 GW by 2030 and 60 GW by 2041.

The country also aims to install up to 7 GW of nuclear capacity by 2041; the first two 1.2 GW reactors of the Rooppur nuclear plant are under construction and expected to be commissioned by 2024. Another nuclear power plant is under consideration.
